In the Gulf, the hot, arid climate presents obvious challenges for large-scale agricultural solutions, meaning food security has long been a priority focus across the region. Over recent decades, economic shifts and population growth have brought increased demand, placing additional pressure on food networks. As global food suppliers become increasingly stretched by rising demand, the focus is shifting from production capacity and volume, to achieving greater efficiency and self-sufficiency – using cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions.

'Investing in Food Security', the first MEED | Middle East Economic Digest-Mashreq Bank services and manufacturing roundtable, brought together industry experts from across the UAE, including Djamal Djouhri from Al Ghurair Foods LLC, to discuss opportunities for building a more resilient food ecosystem. Speaking at the roundtable discussion, Djamal commented:
“Everybody has a different definition of food security, what commodities it encapsulates and what is the threshold. Does it mean no imports? Some imports? We’re not sure. We need to better understand: what is the regulator’s vision for food security? And we need clearer definitions on what is the private sector’s role and how we can invest in and support this change as well.” Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3gJTRqi

    • AG Facilities was awarded the Sustainable Initiative of the Year for the Ghaf  Tree Planting Project

    • The project was in partnership with CAFU to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change by planting more than one million Ghaf  trees across the country using drones

16 June 2021, Dubai, UAE: AG Facilities, one of the leading facility management companies in the UAE, was awarded the Sustainable Initiative of the Year at the Innovation in Facilities Management Awards, one of the region’s leading events recognising individual excellence, corporate strength, and project success. AG Facilities was presented with the award at a gala dinner ceremony which took place at Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk.

The prestigious award was presented to AG Facilities for its outstanding efforts in supporting the innovative Ghaf Tree PlantingProject, launched by CAFU, to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change in the UAE. Earlier this year, AG Facilities and MBM its subsidiary ‘soft services’ company partnered with CAFU to support the project by providing critical manpower to gather and prepare Ghaf seed pods prior to planting.

Travelling across the country, the team collected more than one million pods from numerous sources and transported them back to a central location in Dubai. Once collected, the pods were cleaned and treated, before the seeds were extracted and prepared for planting. The Ghaf tree was selected for this initiative as it is drought-tolerant, requiring very little water or maintenance, and is able to absorb more than 34kg of CO2 per year, equating to more than 4.1 million metric tonnes during the course of is 120-year lifespan.

Commenting on this achievement, John Iossifidis, Group CEO at Al Ghurair Investment, said: “The Ghaf Tree Planting Project is an innovative, transformational project that will play a vital role in combating climate change in the country for generations to come. We are proud to be part of leaving such a significant legacy for the future. It is an honour to be recognised by the Innovation in Facilities Management Awards, and this win is a testament to our commitment towards ensuring a sustainable future for the communities in which we operate.”

He added, “As we move into a post-COVID-19 environment, climate change is at the top of the agenda for governments and policy makers across the globe – but the responsibility for action does not just sit solely at policy or government level, it is an essential obligation for both businesses and individuals alike. Only together, can we shape a better world for tomorrow.”

Mohamed Adil Haneef, Chief Operating Officer at AG Facilities said: “We are honoured to win the Sustainable Initiative of the Year at the 2021 Innovation in Facilities Management Awards. Sustainability is at the core of our business’ agenda and the Ghaf Tree Planting Project represents our enduring commitment to making the world a better place to live. We would like to thank CAFU for the opportunity to collaborate on such a milestone project, as well as the Leadership team of Al Ghurair Investment for the dedication to best practices and social impact.”
