Adil Toubia, Group CEO: “The Group is keen to follow in the footsteps of the UAE leaders and their vision to ensure sustainable development while preserving the environment and reducing carbon footprint.”

Dubai, 1 June 2016 – Commemorating World Environment Day 2016, Al Ghurair today announced its environmental and sustainability plan for the next three years during the event held at Al Ghurair Rayhaan Rotana Hotel. The event discussed the Group’s different activities, best practices and challenges in helping reduce its carbon footprint and how it is working towards making its business more sustainable and environment friendly across the UAE and GCC.

Speaking at the event were Mr. Sultan Al Ghurair, CEO of Al Ghurair Properties, Mr. Badr Al Ghurair, CEO of Al Ghurair Construction, Mr. Djamal Djouhri, CEO of Al Ghurair Resources, and Mr. Timur Ilgaz, General Manager of Al Ghurair Rayhaan Rotana.

The new plans are following the National Initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for building a “green economy for sustainable development”. The Group’s plans will also follow UAE Vision 2021 focusing on improving the quality of air, preserving water resources, increasing the contribution of clean energy and implementing green growth plans.

Adil Toubia, Al Ghurair Investment Group CEO commented: “The Group is keen to follow in the footsteps of the UAE leaders and their vision to ensure sustainable development while preserving the environment and reducing carbon footprint. The UAE Government wants to ensure sustainable development while preserving the environment, and to achieve a perfect balance between economic and social development. “When Expo 2020 comes around, Dubai aims to become one of the top ten sustainable cities in the world, mainly though implementing the green building regulations. As one of the oldest and biggest business Groups in the UAE and region, we are committed to help realize this objective for both our current and future generations,” added Toubia.

The latest initiatives include the development of a new co-generation plant by Al Ghurair Resources that is set to make a huge impact and will further the company’s commitment to sustainability in its business and a significant reduction on carbon footprint. Al Ghurair Properties is also working on replacing all its lighting and cooling systems to reduce energy consumption in the Rayhaan Rotana Hotel, Al Ghurair Center, buildings and corporate offices, thus reducing its carbon footprint.

The UAE’s very first shopping mall, the iconic Al Ghurair Centre in Dubai, is taking centre stage during the 44th National Day celebrations with a colorful tribute to Emirati art, heritage and culture. This year, the celebrations will strike a particularly poignant note, also serving to highlight ‘Martyrs Day’ in honor of the country’s fallen heroes.

In support of the local and expat talent here in the UAE, over 50 renowned Emirati and expatriate artists will feature a ‘time capsule’ view of the United Arab Emirates, from ageless desert landscapes to modern representations of Burj Al Arab and other iconic symbols – marking the unrivalled urban development of the UAE since its formation on December 2nd, 1971.

Sameera-Fernandes---Head-of-Corporate-Affairs--Communicaitons---Al-Ghurair-Investment.jpgSameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications at Al Ghurair Investment said: “As a family business, Al Ghurair has business roots going back more than half a century. Our history is inextricably linked with that of the UAE. We were here at the beginning – and are honored to be playing a small part in the 44th National Day Celebrations. This reflects the fact that Al Ghurair Centre is so much more than a shopping mall – it is an intrinsic part of the development of the UAE”.

International Watercolors Association founder, Atnanur Dogan, said: “We thank Al Ghurair Investment for their invaluable support for the arts and share AGI’s commitment to provide opportunities for the community. We are immensely proud to be working with them on this project to share the Emirati heritage and tradition on UAE National Day”.

In addition to the art works, the Centre’s privately-owned inner streets a stone’s throw from Union Station in Deira will provide the perfect backdrop for a spectacular panoply of 1200 umbrellas arranged to replicate the colors of the national flag, The inspirational art work is specially designed to invoke maximum pride in the achievements of the UAE and its citizens.

The unique art installation took four days to execute and will remain on display at the mall’s entrance 3 until January 2016. More immediately, the eye-catching piece of street art kicks off a six-day schedule of National Day activities at Al Ghurair Centre, from November 30 to December 5, in order to celebrate the ‘Spirit of the Union’.

School trips are also being organized in order to introduce youngsters to the talents of UAE artists – amply demonstrated in an exhibition of watercolors featuring depictions of Emirati and wider Arab life past and present. The initiative not only marks National Day but also Al Ghurair Centre’s twin role as a community hub since its inception in 1981.

19.3% of UAE residents suffer from diabetes that is also affecting health of children, new reports show

    AGI_Kidzania_1.jpg

Al Ghurair Investment partners with Emaar Retail kidZania and Rotana Hotels to create awareness on diabetes and sedentary lifestyle to prevent the disease at an early stage

Nearly one in every five person in the UAE suffers from diabetes, according to a latest report published by International Diabetes Federation on November 14, 2015, which suggests that 19.3 per cent of the UAE population is living with the killer disease.

More than 37 million people in the Middle East and North Africa are diabetic and by 2035 this will rise to 68 million. There were 803,900 cases of diabetes in UAE in 2014.

“In recent years, we have seen a (rapid) rise in type 2 diabetes across all age groups, said the report. “The UAE is ranked 16th worldwide, with 19 per cent of the UAE population living with diabetes. These statistics indicate that the region has high risk factors for diabetes, mostly related to rising obesity rates and physical inactivity.

“Risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke are up to six times higher in people with diabetes. Traditionally, type 2 diabetes is referred to as adult-onset diabetes. However, in recent years diabetes has reached epidemic levels worldwide, with children as young as seven year developing diabetes,” it said.

In order to address this issue and save the future generation from the disease, Al Ghurair Investment, a diversified UAE conglomerate, held a Diabetes Awareness Programme for the children of Al Noor Special Needs School at Dubai Mall’s Kidzania on Monday, November 16, 2015, where participants were told about healthy eating and living habits in order to help them avoid such health problems at a later stage.

Sameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications at Al Ghurair Investment, spoke on how to combat the disease with three easy steps. “Live Healthy, Eat Healthy and Explore,” she told the youngsters. “It is important to eat healthy food to be able to lead a healthy and long life free of diseases and be able to enjoy and explore the opportunities around us,” she says. “Most of these diseases are due to lifestyle-related issues. All we need to do is just be aware and tweak our lifestyle and eating habits to tackle them.”

A sedentary lifestyle and bad eating habits are cited as the main causes of the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the UAE. It is becoming increasingly clear that type 2 diabetes is associated with decreasing levels of activity and an increasing prevalence of obesity. 387 million people have diabetes in the world and more than 37 million people in the MENA Region; by 2035 this will rise to 68 million. There were 803,900 cases of diabetes in UAE in 2014.

“Early detection of pre-diabetes can lead to the prevention of diabetes, and with the implementation of lifestyle changes can greatly reduce the risk of related complications, including blindness, heart attack and stroke,” Sameera Fernandes says.

In its report, the International Diabetes Federation, said, “Just 10 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity three or more times a day can result in health benefits. Eat right, exercise regularly and live for life,” said the report.

Welcoming the young participants, Andries Fourie, General Manager of KidZania, said, “Through its different activities, KidZania teaches children the principles of healthy life style in modern society in an interactive, fun and thrilling environment. This is an important event that we are marking as part of the Diabetes Awareness Month. We need your support in spreading the word – to prevent diabetes by developing healthy eating habits.”

New figures from International Diabetes Federation suggest that 387 million are living with diabetes worldwide, up from 382 million a year ago.

Lorna Watts, Marketing Manager – Al Ghurair Foods stressed on the importance of healthy and nutritious food. “Al Ghurair Foods through its premium brand Jenan offers healthy diet with nutritious offerings such as fresh local eggs, oats, flour, pasta & noodles etc. – all integral components in a diet. At the event we were able to share insights with the children on what they should eat in order to live a healthy life,” she said.

Carine Harb, Director – Marketing, Rotana Hotels and Resorts, spoke on how healthy cooking is important and how kids can learn to make small things like oats bars – good breakfast cereal and great way to start the day. “One doesn’t have to change the entire lifestyle, however just changing the eating habits as well as little bit of physical activity could do wonders – that’s what the children have learnt at the session,” she said.

Anis Kurniawan, Pastry Chef, John Gomes, Rotana Chef and their team offered live demos on healthy food preparation and nutrition at the event that was aimed more at the healthy eating awareness than the culinary aspect.

Also commented Carla Xavier, Al Noor Special Needs School, “The children are delighted to learn and explore various careers and opportunities at KidZania. Initiatives such as these are a great platform for promoting health awareness and teaching children how to stay active and healthy”.

  • Greater awareness could save women's lives from breast cancer in the UAE

Greater awareness could save women's lives from breast cancer in the UAE

    Breast_Cancer_Awareness_Programme.jpg

Al Ghurair Investment and Ministry of Health partners to save lives of women from breast cancer – a growing cause for concern – that takes millions of lives every year across the world

With breast cancer cases growing at an alarming rate, healthcare stakeholders and corporate and business entities are joining hands to reduce the extent of this growing threat in the UAE.

In the UAE, 39 women died due to breast cancer in 2013. Early detection and greater awareness could have saved their lives.

About 40,290 women in the U.S. are feared to die in 2015 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989, according to the not-for-profit organisation breastcancer.org. About 85 per cent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12 per cent) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2015, an estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 60,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

In 2015, there are more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.

“These are alarming statistics and could only be tackled by raising awareness among the women,” Sameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs at Al Ghurair Investment, said on the occasion of a health awareness campaign organized by Al Ghurair Investment LLC and Ministry of Health. “We would have seen lower number of deaths due to breast cancer, had there been a greater awareness.

The event, took place at Al Ghurair Centre’s Al Naadi Health Club, saw women in large numbers opting for free health check-ups. It coincides with the UAE Cancer Congress that takes place from October 29 to 31.

Dr. Latifa Abdulla Alawadhi, Head of Maternal and Child Health and Head of Dubai Medical District Baby Friendly PHC and Preventive Medicine Department, Ministry of Health - Dubai, said, “It’s good to see that large private corporates such as Al Ghurair Investment supporting this important health and social movement – that is going to make such a huge impact in our societies. I’m sure this association will pave way for other private sector organisations to support and lead awareness campaigns such as these in the near future.”

Sameera Fernandes said, “While enjoying a good life, we sometimes forget about health issues. With sedentary lifestyle and lack of awareness, consumers in the UAE develop certain health issues, such as diabetes, obesity as well as cancer, most of which could be cured if detected early.

“Breast cancer is a major cause of concern in every woman in the UAE and as a socially responsible corporate, Al Ghurair has partnered the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders and invited over 500 women to spread awareness as well as provide free consultation including tests,” she said.

“We are happy to announce that a good number of women have benefitted from the day-long event that was held as part of our corporate social responsibility efforts.”

Carine Harb – Director of Marketing – Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana, said, “Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana is pleased to be associated with this event that is close to our heart. It was heartening to see so many participants benefitting from the health advice and this will go a long way in reducing health risk among the participants.”

Highlight of the event was a series of lectures and workshops in which medical experts from the Ministry of Health and other private hospitals addressed dangers and cures including providing free medical tests to diagnose cancer and health tips to self-test at home. Al Ghurair entities and other brand sponsors such as Jenan – the premium brand of Al Ghurair Foods, Thefaceshop, Springfield, Morgan from Al Ghurair Retail, Al Ghurair Center and Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana gave a number of giveaways to the participants at the event.

  • Waste generated by UAE residents to hit 8.4 million tonnes a year by 2017

Waste generated by UAE residents to hit 8.4 million tonnes a year by 2017

Al Ghurair Centre and Oasis Mall creates awareness on waste management Malls’ anti-waste message to the young gets underway as part of Dubai Chamber’s Sustainability Week

sameera.jpgWaste generated by the UAE will increase from 6.6 million tonnes to 8.4 million tonnes by 2017, according to a report released at Eco-Waste conference hosted by Masdar, the Abu Dhabi sustainable energy company.

As much as 29 million tonnes of rubbish will be generated, creating a waste management industry that potentially could be worth Dh6.2 billion by 2017, according to reports.

“These are alarming statistics and could only be tackled by raising awareness among the consumers,” Sameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs at Al Ghurair Investment, said on the occasion of a consumer campaign held at Al Ghurair Centre on October 22-23, 2015.

“Government’s statistics show that 13 million tonnes of waste were collected in Abu Dhabi in 2012, up from 9.6 million tonnes in 2009. Dubai, in comparison, has reduced from 21.8 million tonnes collected in 2009 to 9.6 million tonnes in 2012,” she added.

Children and families were the focus of a fun-filled Waste Management initiative at two Dubai shopping malls as organisers set out to recruit young supporters and their parents to the war on waste. Al Ghurair Centre and Oasis Mall hosted the ‘Act to Sustain’ campaign on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23.

Directly targeting the community, an ‘edutainment’ programme of events was held on both evenings to raise public awareness of waste-related issues. A ‘Recycling Game’ taught participants how to separate recyclable from non-recyclable waste with the aid of a series of stress balls thrown into green and black bins.

Food waste, however, accounts for 55 per cent of all of Dubai waste, and each Ramadan the emirate disposes of 1,850 tonnes of food, which works out to almost a kilogram for each resident.

Dubai Municipality estimates the city recycles 25 per cent of its refuse, but it aims to increase this to 75 per cent by 2021. Public-private partnerships will play a crucial role in meeting this aim.

“Perhaps the municipality’s best example of this partnership is the My City, My Environment campaign, which expanded its scope in May,” Ms Sameera Fernandes says. The programme, which now serves 15 communities, has seen private companies tender contracts to provide and manage segregated rubbish bins for homes across Dubai.”

Other activities included a ‘Rapid Fire Quiz’ on waste management topics and, for younger children, a ‘Colouring Zone’ with crayons introduced them to waste-management and recycling in a fun-friendly way. The two-day initiative was supported by retail outlets within Al Ghurair Centre and Oasis Mall who provided volunteers to man the events.

    antw1.jpgantw2.jpg

Corporate supporters Dulsco and Cummins helped organize the games and activities, providing materials and prizes – and enticing participants by exchanging plastic bags for recycled bags. Visitors were encouraged to spread the ‘anti-waste’ message by taking photos of a specially-installed Instagram Frame and promoting it on social media.

The ‘Act to Sustain’ Campaign was part of the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Week 2015 which also marked the organisation’s 50th anniversary. Organised by the Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business, the theme of this year’s event was ‘Our World – Our Responsibility.’

“As one of the Chamber’s founding members and leader of its Waste Management & Resource Efficiency Task Group, we were delighted to host the ‘Act to Sustain’ initiative at Al Ghurair Centre”, said Sameera Fernandes added.

“We are always looking to directly engage the community in anti-waste measures. In particular we need to get the sustainability message across to children and families – and edutainment activities provide a great means of communicating a serious topic in a fun way.”

Al Ghurair Celebrates World Heart Day

    heart_day.jpg

Al Ghurair marked World Heart Day 2015 with a staff awareness initiative entitled "Healthy Heart", aimed at promoting a healthy workplace by inspiring employees to make simple lifestyle changes.

Organised in collaboration with NMC Heartcare, "Healthy Heart" witnessed the participation of Dr. Srinivasa Rao Polumuru – Specialist, Internal Medicine who gave an inspirational speech.

In addition to valuable dietary advice, the session provided complimentary checks on cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and blood sugar to the participating employees.

Commented Dr.Srinivasa Rao Polumuru, Specialist – Internal Medicine, “Heart disease and stroke is the world’s largest killer, accounting for 17.5 million deaths annually. Heart disease and stroke is largely preventable if the main risk factors, including high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol and blood glucose, tobacco use, overweight and obesity, and salt intake are reduced. And physical activity and the intake of fruit and vegetables are increased”.

Sameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications, said, "Al Ghurair prioritizes the well-being of its people. As part of this commitment, we seek opportunities to host events that raise our employees’ awareness on the importance of healthy living. World Heart Day serves as a timely reminder to review unhealthy habits and adopt new ones to minimise cardiovascular risks. We are glad that our initiative to mark this global call focused on the need to combine healthy eating with moderate physical activity. We are confident our consistent efforts will help create and maintain heart-healthy environments for our staff."

She further added, “As most of us spend over half our waking hours working, the workplace is ideal to promote heart-healthy messages and raise awareness about the risk factors for heart disease and stroke. A heart-healthy workplace encourages a healthy diet, physical activity and a smoke-free environment. Research has shown that workplace-wellness programmes have benefits for both employees and employers, by improving health, productivity and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. This year World Heart Day encouraged everyone to take responsibility for their own heart health.”

World Heart Day is an event that is observed worldwide on 29th September. Each year’s celebration takes on a different theme, reflecting key issues and topics related to heart health. This year, World Health Day is built around the need to create heart-healthy environments.

  • Al Ghurair University opens doors to a whole new world to fresh graduates at annual Career Fair

    18 May, 2015

    logo-al_uni.jpg

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS AT AL GHURAIR INVESTMENT

Al Ghurair University today organized a Career Fair for its fresh graduates where large companies set up their stands to welcome the prospective employees as most public and private sector organisations are recruiting professionals to manage their expansion.

image003.jpgWith the UAE economy expected to grow at between 4.5 to 5 per cent this year, most companies are expected to hire new employees. As employers are becoming more sophisticated due to the fast changing job market landscape, educational institutions also need to produce quality graduates to help organisations to navigate through various aspects of the economic cycles and manage the changes. Al Ghurair University is one such institution that not only develop people as per the market needs — it also develops future administrative leaders, entrepreneurs and job creators.

“While most universities have a careers officer, Al Ghurair University has a dedicated Centre for Career Planning and Placement Services. It works throughout the year with potential employers in the UAE and elsewhere – assessing their requirements and putting them in touch with students who have or will have the requisite skills,” Dr. Abdelrahim Mohammed Al Ameen, President of Al Ghurair University, says.

The institution focuses on building the future generation of UAE nation's leaders by instilling the required skills and nurturing their inner strength to serve the country.

The curricula at Al Ghurair University is focused on youth empowerment through education, innovation and sustainability keeping in mind to prepare them to fulfill the UAE Government’s Vision as well as managing mega global events such as World Expo 2020. Al Ghurair University works hand in hand with the Government to support their vision while it remains a trusted institution 'committed to enhancing lives'.

“It is not just about placing our graduates in any jobs – but the right jobs. We channel our student talent into the proper career streams and, on graduation, into professions that are directly linked to their major. This serves both the career ambitions of the student and the skill-set needs of the employer. It is a year round collaboration with multiple industry sectors – so the AGU Career Fair is simply the culmination of that,” Al Ameen says.

Al Ghurair University is a private higher educational institution that was founded in 1999 by the well-known Al Ghurair Investment LLC for the purpose of serving the national and regional community through equipping the young generations with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the development and productivity of their communities.

With the growth of the economy, the UAE will need its home-grown leaders and academicians to chart the future path of this great nation. Al Ghurair University — a fertile breeding ground for quality graduates ready to take up challenges.

There has never been a more exciting time to work in the public sector, with job opportunities in multiple industries awaiting the best and brightest of Emirati talent. This was the message delivered yesterday at the annual Career Fair of Al Ghurair University (AGU) – one of the highlights of the recruitment year for private and public sector alike.

image005.jpgThe AGU Campus at Dubai Academic City was packed with students, alumni, careers advisers, recruitment agencies, government representatives, blue chip companies and other key players from commerce and industry throughout the Gulf. Al Ghurair University is renowned for finding graduates jobs in their profession of choice – with a placement record equaling that of world-famous Harvard in the U.S.

Dr. Al Ameen said that students should not set out with a determination to work in either the public or private sector but should instead “chase their career dreams”. Once qualified, they could then decide where their skills would best be deployed.

“Traditionally, Emiratis tend to favor Government jobs which explains the tiny percentage working in the private sector. But really, there has never been a more exciting or challenging time to pursue private sector careers. Banking, Media, Food, Retail and Tourism are just a few of the sunshine industries set for phenomenal growth in the next decade – not least in the run up to Expo 2020 in Dubai”.

Al Ghurair University is an educational initiative of Dubai-based conglomerate Al Ghurair Investment LLC which describes AGU as “our investment in the future of the UAE”. Founded in 1999, the University is a community-orientated institution dedicated to the social, as well as academic, development of its students. In close alliance with the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, AGU keeps its fingers closely ‘on the pulse’ of UAE and Gulf society in order to advance “the educational, cultural, social and economic interests of the region and beyond”.

  • Food security to strengthen economic growth of Gulf countries

Food security to strengthen economic growth of Gulf countries

image003.jpgFood security could strengthen economic growth and social stability. Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman of Al Ghurair Resources, urges industry stakeholders to invest in the region’s food security -- which is a shared responsibility of everyone

    Important Note

    1. Gulf countries import up to 90 per cent of their food from abroad.

    2. Per capita food consumption for the GCC region is forecasted to reach 971.2 kilogramme by 2015 and 983.0 kilogrammes 2017.

    3. Food import bill of the countries in the Gulf region will double from US$24.1 billion in 2009 to US$53.1 billion by 2020.

    4. Population of the GCC countries is expected to cross 53.5 million in 2020 from 36 million today.

    Dubai/Ras Al Khaimah

Food security has gained momentum in the Gulf region with massive investment by the public and the private sector.

Gulf countries that import up to 90 per cent of their food from abroad, have recently increased investment in food-growing farms in Asia and Africa as well as started to built strategic food reserves.

Population of the GCC countries is expected to cross 53.5 million in 2020 from 36 million today while their food import bill is expected to double from US$24.1 billion in 2009 to US$53.1 billion by 2020, according to Alpen Capital’s latest reports on healthcare and food security.

The food consumption in the region will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1 per cent over 2012-17, reaching 49.1 million metric tonnes by the end of 2017, according to Alpen Capital.

Per capita food consumption for the GCC region is forecasted to reach 971.2 kilogramme by 2015 and 983.0 kilogrammes 2017.

This increase is attributed to the rapidly growing population in the GCC, increase in foreign tourists as well as the rising income levels of the region.

Although nominal GDP is forecast to soar to over US$2 trillion in 2020, the ability of the GCC governments to ensure food security would largely depend on cash reserves.

“Global Warming, Food Security and Sustainability are some of the focal issues that countries in the Gulf are trying to tackle. Food security could help socio-economic development and strengthen stability in the region,” Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman of Al Ghurair Resources, said at a conference here.

image005.jpgFood security can be described as the sufficient availability, access and use of food or nutrients, which ensures survival and growth of the human population.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines food security to exist “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”. With a fast growing global population, food production has to also intensify substantially from less available land due to urban expansion and land degradation, in order to meet future food needs.

This makes food security arguably one of the greatest challenges the world is facing and directs to the importance of optimising available land productivity.

Food security is fast becoming a focus for Gulf countries, who have already increased strategic food storage and invested in agriculture overseas.

“As we embark on an exciting journey where our country prepares for the next phase of development to become a smart and happy nation guided by the Government’s Vision 2021, food security could help strengthen our ambitious journey ahead,” Al Ghurair told delegates and experts at the Third International Conference on Global Warming: Food Security, organised by the Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA) of Ras Al Khaimah.

“Food security is a shared responsibility.”

Public and private sectors in the Gulf countries have already made steady progress in facing the food security and climate challenges issues. Over the last few years, governments and the private sectors have undertaken a number of initiatives to create greater awareness on the subject and prepare to face the challenge of food security, climate change and sustainability head on.

The UAE has been very active in its efforts to ensure food security. The country is also promoting the development of aquaculture projects and improving food security through purchase of arable lands in East Africa, Southern Europe and South Asia. Al Dahra, a private firm, which seeks to partner with UAE government to ensure food security, acquired 8 agricultural companies in Serbia.

image007.jpgAl Ghurair Foods and Al Ghurair Resources along with its holding company — Al Ghurair Investment LLC — has realigned businesses to support the social and economic needs of the UAE in line with the UAE government’s vision to create a healthy, prosperous and a happy nation by investing in critical businesses such as food and commodities.

Over the last few years, the company has created a strong food production, storage, transportation and supply infrastructure across the region to ensure uninterrupted and sufficient food supply to feed the population.

Al Ghurair Resources is the agricultural commodities arm of Al Ghurair Investment and the largest grain unloading and handling operators in the Middle East. The company currently runs one of the largest food grain processing, transportation, storage and logistics base in the Middle East. It has a 300,000 grain storage facility as well as operate the largest soya and canola seed crushing plant in the Gulf.

It’s flour mill has a capacity to produce 2,000 tonnes per day while the soya crushing plant produces 4,000 tonnes of soyabean oil per day.

Additionally, its edible oil refinery refines 300 tonnes per day. The company’s legumes plant produces 100 tonnes of oats per day while it also process 100 tonnes of pulses — yellow peas — per day.

Al Ghurair also produces 200 tonnes of animal feed per day.

In March this year, the company handled 301,750 metric tonnes of food commodities — a record high level in the country’s history. Al Ghurair Resources owns two terminals at the Port, known as Berths No. 3 and 7 – and it was their combined performance that delivered the biggest monthly offload figures ever recorded by the company.

To achieve the March 2015 figure, a total of nine unloading vessels were handled during the month – 7 Panamax and 2 Supramax. These reflect the company’s continuous capacity development to support the UAE’s food security.

The company has invested significant resources in developing Al Jabal Poultry Farm — part of Al Ghurair Foods — to ensure domestic production and supply of poultry products and reduce the UAE’s dependence on imported food.

Established in 2003, Al Jabal Poultry Farm has a production capacity of more than 210 million eggs per year employing 110 people.

As a green and sustainable poultry farm, it composts all manure and other organic waste. The company also incorporates the organic waste of Al Ghurair Foods and Al Ghurair Resources and sells them as a fertiliser. It has a complete composting system with minimal environmental impact, which exceeds world standards.

image009.jpgThe chicken feed is sourced from its own feed mill where the principal ingredients are maize, soybean meal, Canola and flaxseeds sourced from long term trusted suppliers.

Al Jabal Poultry Farm strives to be the first port of call for the nation’s freshest most trustworthy quality eggs as well as food safety and hen welfare. The eggs of Al Jabal Poultry Farm are produced in the most economical way with the least environmental impact, as part of the group’s corporate social responsibility.

Al Jabal Poultry Farm has recently started to produce Omega eggs — the vitamin enriched eggs for healthy life.

“As an environmentally friendly and sustainable business, we are working hard to reduce our electricity consumption with specific actions, We convert all our waste into fertiliser for the nation’s farms, gardens and municipal parks and green areas,” Al Ghurair says.

“This is one example of how Al Ghurair Investment creates additional value for the UAE society and the nation and the well-being of its consumers in a responsible and sustainable manner.”

All of these efforts are also in line with the stated objectives of the Environment Protection and Development Authority. As a UAE national company, it wants to engage in responsible business practices that will support the UAE’s greater economic vision and ensures social sustainability.

    Editor’s Note

Al Ghurair is one of the largest diversified industrial enterprises in the Middle East, with global reach and business roots stretching back half a century. The group has interests in wider economic areas with focus on foods, construction, resources and properties with additional sector participation in retail, printing, energy and education.

AGI Stakeholder in Sustainability: Working Together for a Better Tomorrow

agi_stake.jpgAl Ghurair Investment’s reputation as a champion of sustainable business practices was further underscored in April when the Group was among a select number of corporate invitees to the annual Tristar Sustainability Stakeholder Engagement Event held in Dubai.

Tristar is a fully integrated liquid logistics company, providing road transport, warehousing and shipping services in the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Central America. However, like Al Ghurair Investment (AGI), Tristar is also committed to integrating sustainability into its business – and conducts a yearly ‘audit’ of its performance.

It does this via an annual Sustainability Report which is presented to respected stakeholders such as AGI for vital ‘touchstone’ feedback – and the 2013 Report presented in April adopted the theme ‘Working Together for a Better Tomorrow’. The report describes Tristar’s overall sustainability approach and efforts in the realms of Health & Safety, Employee Wellbeing, Community Development and Environmental Impact.

The Tristar report is particularly respected as it is developed according to best international practices, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The company is also a member of the United Nations Global Compact which embraces a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards and anti-corruption.

The company is dedicated to honest and transparent business operations, and highly values “continuous dialogue” with stakeholders such as Al Ghurair Investment who pioneered Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Gulf and share Tristar’s commitment to the highest standards of corporate governance.

Al Ghurair Resources operates two terminals at the Port, known as Berth No. 3 and No. 7 – and it was their combined performance that delivered the biggest monthly offload figures ever recorded by AGR.

The total offload figure also disguises a ‘record within a record’ as Berth No. 3, at GIEX location, accounted for 238,732 MT, the highest offloading undertaken by Gulf Grain Elevators in any month since its inception.

Berth No. 7, run by AGR at EOCD location, accounted for the remainder of the 300,000-plus MT total. The historic offload figures easily outstrip the previous record – 185,135 MT in January 2011.

Del Monte Award for Al Ghurair Foods

del_monte.jpgAl Ghurair Foods (AGF) has been honoured by Del Monte, one of the world’s fastest growing food and beverage brands, who bestowed their prestigious ‘Preferred Partner Award’ on AGF at the annual Del Monte Toll Manufacturers Conference in Baguio, Philippines in March. The award recognizes the contribution of Al Ghurair Foods as a supplier to Del Monte and, in particular, its “dedication and commitment to the highest standards of service”.

The citation specifically mentions the AGF innovations that have furthered the progress of Del Monte Philippines Inc. (DMPI) in the past year. Pasta sales by Del Monte have grown substantially in the last few years and – although not a core product – is seen as key to furthering the DMPI brand and providing a platform for other products.

Like Al Ghurair Foods, Del Monte is committed to health and wellbeing, seeking out suppliers that can be trusted to provide the very best quality and nutritional value. One of only 20 international suppliers invited to the Baguio Conference, AGF was represented by Tim Whitehead, Head of Sales – Consumer Foods, and Dennis Valdellon, Sales Executive.

The annual conference goal is to raise standards amongst the various Del Monte suppliers. The ‘Preferred Partner Award’ to Al Ghurair Foods was all the more noteworthy as it was the first time the company had been invited to the event.

Food Security Vital to Social Stability in the Gulf Region

‘Invest in Agriculture’ urges Al Ghurair

Security of food supplies is the foundation stone of a stable and safe society, the World Food Security Summit in Dubai heard yesterday. Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman of Al Ghurair Resources – the agricultural commodities arm of Al Ghurair Investment – said that civil order was heavily dependent on food sufficiency.

Mr Al Ghurair said that food security was particularly important for the Gulf and wider Middle East because of rapidly increasing population; a dearth of arable land and shortage of water. “These are not factors that are going to change – so we need to mitigate them with strategic solutions planned well ahead of time.

440A0551.JPG These solutions cannot be company-centric or the result of government dictate. Neither the private sector nor government can achieve them alone. They can only be achieved by close collaboration between the two”. Al Ghurair Foods and Al Ghurair Resources own farms, mills and food plants abroad – and Mr Al Ghurair called for more investment by governments in foreign farms, processing and storage facilities.

Addressing GCC Land Acquisition Strategies, Al Ghurair said such investment should only be made in politically stable countries, with due consideration to logistical issues and, not least, the food needs of the local population. It was also preferable to invest in countries with the required infrastructure and which could provide an export market.

He identified Africa and South-East Asia as the most likely targets for new farmland acquisitions and collaborations with US, Canada, Australia and South American countries in developing agriculture business. Both the private and public sector had to decide “the next big market for GCC food supply” and draw up plans accordingly; always weighing the commercial viability of investing in land at home v abroad.

The World Food Security Summit was a Gulf Leaders Event hosted by Gulfood 2015, the world’s leading foods and hospitality exhibition at Dubai World Trade Centre; its central theme being ‘Development of a Food Security Strategy as an Immediate Priority for the GCC’.

Commitment to the future of Special Needs children won Al Ghurair Investment the ‘Best Consumer Marketing Campaign’ at the prestigious Gulfood Awards held in February at the Conrad Hotel, Dubai. In December 2014 AGI organized a ‘Connect with Nature’ visit by Special Needs schoolchildren to the Al Jabal Poultry Farm in Ras Al Khaimah, owned by Al Ghurair Foods. The children closely interacted with farm personnel who took them through a range of activities designed to explain what goes on at the farm; the value of freshness and nutrition; and the importance of health, safety and hygiene.

The subsequent Gulfood Award recognized “a highly successful marketing campaign promoting employability of special needs children”. Following the ceremony, Sameera Fernandes, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications at AGI, said: “We are honored to be awarded the Best Consumer Marketing Campaign because it reflects the strength and diversity of our marketing initiatives.

“Through our partnership with Special Needs children and various private entities, we are committed to making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate around us. Promoting employability of special needs young people through education and awareness programs increases their chances of getting a job, which in turn makes them more independent and secure”.

She paid tribute to the excellent job done by AGI’s Core Communications Team, the Al Ghurair Foods team and all others involved in delivering the award-winning initiative. Their collective efforts showed an understanding of the need “to strategically align the company’s marketing activities with AGI objectives; thus enabling activities for maximum impact”.

The companies participating in the Waste Management Campaign include Al Ghurair Investment, Apparel Group, Henkel GCC, Majid Al Futtaim Properties, Eros Group, Dulsco, SamTech Middle East, Al Rostamani Pegel, Veolia Environment, QBG Facilities Management, Al Futtaim Carillion, Six Construct, Intercoil International LLC, ECCS.Co, du, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), Blossom Nursery, Lulu Hypermarket and Saeed, Dulsco & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group.Panel_discussion_on_Challenges__Opportunities_in_Resource_Management.JPGThe drive towards sustainable practices from both businesses and the wider community has been gaining much momentum over past years. The Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network began with just four corporate members in 2010. It now has more than 50 and is aiming to grow this to 100 by 2017. Between 2010 and 2013 it organised more than 70 networking events.

The Dubai Chamber Centre for Responsible Business marked its tenth year in 2014 and assists its members in applying corporate and social responsibility practices that enhance their performance and competitiveness. Most recently this year it organised a comprehensive waste management campaign. In partnership with a number of prominent regional and international organisations, the campaign was conducted across different areas of the community.

Held in Dubai on 12 November at Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana, this year’s CEO Dialogue marks the third year of the annual event aimed at promoting sustainable business.

Industry Milestone for Al Ghurair Investment and UAE – Japan Ties

Thirty Years of Trade & Friendship

2.gifBusiness relations between the UAE and Japan have reached a historic milestone with the 30th anniversary of industrial collaboration between Dubai-based conglomerate Al Ghurair Investment LLC and many of Japan’s most famous companies.

The group’s first association was with the legendary Mitsubishi Corporation which was convinced by Al Ghurair that the UAE offered many opportunities for the Japanese industrial giant. The deal helped paved the way for UAE-Japan trade links.

In the three decades since, Al Ghurair has conducted many Joint Venture projects with the Corporation and its subsidiaries, culminating in the choice of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to head the consortium that built Dubai Metro, the world’s longest automated light transit system.

The very first joint venture, focusing on the Elevator business, was signed between Mitsubishi Electric Corporation – MELCO – and the original Al Ghurair Corporation in 1983 – at the beginning of the Gulf construction boom. The business later expanded into Turkey, India, Sri Lanka and the CIS – and today is still going strong.

The Al Ghurair-Mitsubishi partnership also led to close associations with a host of other companies whose names make up a ‘Who’s Who’ of Japanese industrial might. They include the Sumimoto Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation and Hitachi.

Among the many Infrastructure, Power, Shipping and Trading activities jointly undertaken, is a revolutionary sewage treatment plant in Ras Al Khaimah, a joint venture between Al Ghurair and Hitachi Plant Technologies inaugurated in 2010.

The highly-advanced Wastewater Treatment & Recycling Plant, undertaken in conjunction with the R.A.K. Investment Authority, was funded as a Research Project by the Japanese Government – further cementing its close ties with the UAE. These ties also resulted in major support for victims of the 2011 Tsunami when Al Ghurair Vice-Chairman, Essa Al Ghurair, was at the forefront of a fund-raising campaign.

“Having been  associated with Japanese companies for the last three decades, Al Ghurair Investment L.L.C. is even more determined to develop further ties in the areas of bilateral trade and industrial projects”, said the Vice Chairman. “These ties not only benefit our companies but also our two countries.

“A 30-year anniversary is usually a good time to reflect. And if history has taught us anything, it is that countries that trade together, usually stay together. While trade is an economic necessity in its own right, no-one should underestimate the huge gateway it provides for social and cultural exchange.

“Thirty years ago I doubt if many people in Japan had even heard of the UAE. Today we have regular cultural exchange programs; Japanese tourists flock to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in their thousands via daily flights; there is an ever-growing Japanese ‘Expat’ population with its own schools - and, thankfully, many fine Japanese restaurants!

1.gif “In other words, today Japan and the UAE are not only trading partners but close friends – and I firmly believe that none of that would have been possible without those early business contacts between Al Ghurair, the Mitsubishi Corporation and other Japanese companies 30 years ago”.

Mr Al Ghurair met the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at this year’s Japan-UAE Business Forum in Abu Dhabi. The Prime Minister said he placed huge importance on business and trade relations with the UAE – and spoke of the “abiding friendship between our two countries”.

The Al Ghurair Vice-Chairman has been invited to address the 15th Nikkei Global Management Forum in Kyoto, Japan on October 21-22. The Forum brings together the world’s most accomplished business executives. This year’s theme is ‘Management Strategies for Making Great Strides: The Essential Requisites of a Leader’.

Mr Al Ghurair’s presentation focuses on how ‘Trust Drives Sustainable Success in Business’. The key to trust, he says, is “commitments made and commitments honoured”. Post 2008 and the global economic downturn, trust in business and financial institutions had eroded to a degree which meant that “trust is now a critical make-or-break factor in determining a company’s success or failure”.

Food For The Body, Food For The Soul

Volunteers Bring ‘Spirit of Ramadan’ To Needy

Fatigued, fasting and fighting the blistering heat of day, a team of charity volunteers gave up their entire weekend to bring the ‘Spirit of Ramadan’ to disadvantaged families and needy fishermen. The team was supported by the Foods Division of Al Ghurair Investment LLC who provided the contents for 3000 food parcels and Iftar meals delivered to homes in Dubai and Sharjah – and to fishermen in both Emirates.

The 30 volunteers began their Food Charity Drive on Friday, headed for the homes of deserving families disadvantaged by social circumstances. “The families were so thankful for the food – but just as grateful for the friendship offered in the true spirit of Ramadan”, said team organizer Somayeh Berenjian.

RamadanVolunteering.jpgAfter delivering 200 bags containing 17 food essentials to the families, the following day  saw the Foods Charity team target local fisherman, delivering enough Iftar meals to feed 2,800 fishermen  - including the entire complement on the Baniyas side of Dubai Creek.

“Despite the 48 degree heat, the fatigue and the fasting – and our 12-car convoy occasionally getting lost along the way – all our prayers were answered”, said Ms. Somayeh. “We got all our food and meals delivered on time, and every team member agreed that the charity drive represented the most fulfilling days of Ramadan for us all ”.

Al Ghurair Foods donated rice, oats, spaghetti, pasta, noodles, flour and oil to the charity effort. The company also supported a separate ‘Ramadan Charity Drive’ organized in conjunction  with the Dubai Charity Association. For the fifth successive year, the parties marked the Holy Month by providing donated clothes, accessories, household items, toys and books to needy families and local charities.

“But it’s about more than providing material goods”, said Sameera Fernandes, Group Corporate Communications Manager for Al Ghurair Investment LLC. “Ultimately it’s about strengthening our bonds with the community and sharing the many blessings of Ramadan”.

Dubai Firms Lead Waste Drive – but  ‘Much To Be Done’

No Room for Complacency – Al Ghurair

    officialsWasteDriveNew.jpg

The business community in Dubai is not doing enough to combat waste – despite   leading the UAE in waste management initiatives, according to a leading proponent of Corporate Social Responsibility. Essa Al Ghurair, vice-chairman of Al Ghurair Investment LLC, said yesterday that “much has still to be done” to fight wasteful business practices.

“Per head of population, the UAE is one of the world’s biggest producers of waste – in terms of both domestic and corporate output”, he said. “That is something we must all strive to change – and Dubai should be at the forefront of that change, as it is in so many other areas of activity.

“It is true that much progress has been made, but we cannot be complacent. Dubai is a leader in waste management programs – yet fewer than 50% of companies in the emirate have any kind of environmental policy. It’s no use saying we are doing better than elsewhere – the fact is we are still not doing well enough”.

WasteDriveImg.jpgAs a company, Al Ghurair were early pioneers of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the Gulf and Middle East and are part of the leadership team within the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network  which has 50 leading national and international companies that have come together with the objective of advancing CSR and sustainability in the UAE. The ground-breaking ‘Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network’ was set up by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Centre for Responsible Business in 2010.

The Chamber has just launched the Sustainability Network’s special ‘Task Groups’ for 2013 that will address sustainability and broader CSR challenges through joint initiatives. Al Ghurair will lead the Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Task Group – comprising of 20 leading companies – with co-leader Axiom Telecom.

That role was recently recognised by the International Chambers of Commerce’s World Chambers Federation which honored Dubai Chamber for “Best CSR Project” as Dr. Belaid Rettab, Senior Director, Economic Research and Sustainable Business Development Sector, Dubai Chamber, said: “We are delighted to be rewarded for our efforts. Dubai Chamber puts great emphasis on promoting CSR and, with our partners across the business community, we are able to ensure that Dubai continues to lead the region in this regard.”

Addressing the Chamber’s launch ceremony, Sameera Fernandes the Group Corporate Communications Manager of Al Ghurair reinforced her Vice-Chairman’s comments on the eco-efforts of Dubai’s business community. Figures showed that “only 18.3% of Dubai companies have an Environmental Management System”, she said.

The statistics – compiled by the Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business – also revealed that only 35.1% of Dubai companies “had a Corporate Environmental Policy of any kind”. On the specific issue of waste management and resource efficiency (WMRE), only 46.1% of the emirate’s companies had systems in place to measure energy usage, while 47.2% had measurement systems for water and materials usage.

Ms Fernandes said a core objective of the WMRE Task Group was to develop an overview of existing Waste Management and Resource Efficiency measures adopted by members in order to establish and share ‘best practices’ with the wider business community.

Since the beginning of 2012 Dubai Chamber has established 15 separate Task Groups to tackle issues of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility within the UAE. Ms Fernandes paid tribute to the Chamber for their “pre-eminent role in spreading the philosophy of CSR, not only in the UAE but throughout the Gulf and wider Middle East region”.

    Star Role for ‘Green’ Hotel

The night sky is under increasing threat from a little-known form of pollution – but a Dubai hotel is determined to tackle the problem. Nojoum Hotel Apartments in Deira has embarked on a special initiative to help protect the desert sky from man-made light emissions.

Industrial and commercial light pollution is a growing world problem, making the night sky “glow” – to the dismay of environmentalists and astronomers whose spectacular   view of the stars against a black curtain of night is diminished.

FouadNohraEng.gif“Nojoum is the Arabic word for ‘Stars’ – so it seemed appropriate that Nojoum Hotel Apartments should act to preserve clear visibility of the stars that inspired our name”, said Engineer Fouad Nohra, Head of Operations, Al Ghurair Properties.

“The night sky has always fascinated Arabs – which is probably why we became pioneers in the science and art of astronomy a thousand years ago. So, although our own little contribution at Nojoum is miniscule by comparison, it does make the project very close to the heart”.

That project involves special measures to limit the emission of light into the atmosphere. All 77 apartments in the hotel are configured to make maximum use of natural daylight rather than artificial light. And, after dark, when electric light is a necessity, eco-friendly lighting systems are used.

“It is second nature for most people to turn on the light switch the minute they enter a hotel room”, said Fouad Nohra. “But we have changed that culture. For the greater part of the day, natural light is perfectly adequate to conduct most of the hotel’s activities. All our cleaning and other operations are conducted using natural light whenever possible.

“When there is no alternative to artificial light, the systems we use involve low-level LED lighting which is directed to point of use and does not cause outdoor emissions which contribute to sky glow. Not only that, but we achieve a 75% energy saving in the process”.

What have pleased the hotel most is the participation of both long-term and short-term guests who are actively encouraged to use natural daylight and co-operate with the hotel’s many other environmentally-friendly practices. These include segregating all types of waste – such as cans, bottles and paper – for recycling, and using special tap and shower filters which reduce water wastage by almost 50 per cent.

“Nojoum Hotel Apartments are long-established and we have a very faithful clientele”, says Engineer Fouad Nohra. “More than 30 per cent of our clients are repeat guests who head straight for Nojoum whenever they are in Dubai. It is their home-from-home so they take a keen interest in everything that goes on.

“We are talking about well-educated, family-oriented people who like to stay in a friendly boutique hotel with a distinct family atmosphere and a safe alcohol-free environment.

“This kind of client is by nature socially responsible and aware. Most of our guests are now very familiar with the hotel’s green initiatives and welcome them enthusiastically. Indeed, there is a growing demographic of travelers – business people and tourists alike – who are keenly aware of their carbon footprint and wish to minimize it at every opportunity.

“This new breed of environmentally-conscious travelers will deliberately plan their trips with that in mind. They will only travel and stay with ethically-sound establishments like Nojoum who share their eco-friendly values and concerns for Planet Earth……...

    “And, of course, the stars!”.

Tharawat Family Business Forum hosts Roundtable to discuss the Multiple Roles of Women in Arabian Family Businesses

news-FamilyBusinessForum.jpgFamily business members from North Africa, the Levant and the GCC gathered in Dubai at the end of April for an interactive roundtable session to discuss the multiple roles played by women in family-owned businesses. As over 80% of all businesses in the MENA are family-owned and family-run, and have a great impact on the region as key pillars of the economy, examining the impact of women as family members, managers and owners is crucial to understand the factors that influence the sustainability of family firms. With a goal to start a constructive dialogue on the subject, the event focused on finding a better understanding of the realities facing female family members in the region.

Organised and hosted by Tharawat Family Business Forum, an independent, non-profit membership network of family-owned enterprises in the Arab World, the roundtable was a unique opportunity to exchange experiences and thoughts on the subject, and to analyse the development, challenges and opportunities encountered by women in family businesses.

The attendees from leading regional businesses explored the variety of roles that women play with relation to the family business, be it as managers, owners or family members and custodians of family harmony. The speakers shared their insights and thoughts with an audience and engaged in interactive group work to explore the topics further.

The session’s keynote speaker, Mrs. Hana Al Rostamani, Head of Strategic Planning at the First Gulf Bank, UAE and a director at the Al Rostamani Group explored the impact of women on family business sustainability and identified a direct and an indirect relationship of women with their family firms: Be it as part of boards and management teams on the one hand or as educators of the next generation and emotional caretaker on the other hand, she emphasized that is a need to better understand the roles and impact of women in family business.

Mrs. Zeina Tabari, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Drake&Scull International, UAE shared her experience in managing the family business and the challenges of finding the right governance structure to fit each family. Including female family members in this process, even if they are not active in the business, is a crucial success factor for the longevity of such structures.

In the following session, Ms. Najla Al Suhaimi, Executive Manager at Al Suhaimi Design, KSA, recounted her experience of being a family business member and entrepreneur simultaneously and emphasized that women as much as men have to prove themselves in the world of business.

Focusing on her experience as a third generation family member Ms Wafa Elnefeidi, Manager at the Elnefeidi Group, Sudan addressed the issues faced by women in her community. She found that even if individual families are supportive of their female family members taking on a more active role in the business, the community still is largely prejudiced, which leads to day-to-day challenges for businesswomen.

Closing the roundtable, Mrs. Noor Sweid, Managing Director Strategy at DEPA, UAE, discussed the importance of women as custodians of family harmony. She held that women have to be aware of the fact that they do play a crucial role in mediating between parties within the family and that in order to be effective in that role, they have to ensure that they have a fulfilled and balanced personal life.

Strongly supporting the initiative, Mr. Essa Al Ghurair, Vice-Chairman of UAE conglomerate Al Ghurair Investment LLC, and Chairman of the Tharawat Family Business Forum said that women were “a strong foundation of the Arab family – so why shouldn’t they bring their wisdom and strengths to the business arena, and indeed, the boardroom?” He added: “As wives and mothers, on a daily basis women deal with a multitude of tasks requiring good sense, patience, understanding and, not least, hard work. What better qualities could you ask of an employee or a manager? In the home, women have to juggle all their responsibilities simultaneously in order to keep it running smoothly. Men call this ‘multi-tasking’ - Women call it an ordinary day. A multitude of studies have shown women in business to be less confrontational than men, better able to find consensus and more skilled at handling human resources. To deny women their rightful place in business is to deny business a wealth of talent – and we cannot afford to do that!”

The session ended after intense group discussions and reflections, identifying common challenges facing women throughout the region. In her closing words Ms. Farida El Agamy, General Manager of Tharawat Family Business Forum said that the session’s goal was to start a dialogue to better understand and map the concerns and hopes of women involved in family businesses. She declared that as part of its program Tharawat would further focus on this area and develop concrete next steps to take up some of the issues raised during the roundtable.

Al Ghurair Foods and Federal Foods Sign Distribution Deal

A shared commitment to building a sustainable business across the UAE

    United Arab Emirates: March 2013

Zakaria-Aakil.gifAl Ghurair Foods and Federal Foods have joined forces in a deal which brings together two of the Gulf’s leading Food Sector companies. The firms signed an agreement under which Federal Foods will distribute Al Ghurair Foods’ wide portfolio of manufactured products throughout the UAE. Both companies are widely-recognized in their respective fields. Federal Foods is one of the UAE’s leading distributors in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) market while Al Ghurair Foods is a long-established foodstuffs manufacturer with international reach.

“Al Ghurair Foods is committed to building the business based on strong brands – and strong brands need strong distribution”, said C.E.O Zakaria Aakil. “Hence we believe that Federal Foods is the right partner to help us achieve that goal.

” Federal Foods Vice-Chairman Adel Al Nowais said that Al Ghurair Foods had been a “pioneering force in UAE food production since the 1970s”, manufacturing products of proven quality that reflected the capabilities of their producers. “We strive to partner with brands that have a mission similar to Federal Foods and, in Al Ghurair, we have a perfect match.” Both are long-established UAE businesses and part of parent groups with diverse interests. Federal Foods is a subsidiary of privately-owned conglomerate, Al Nowais Investment LLC, while Al Ghurar Foods is a division of family-owned ‘Al Ghurair’ - also known as Al Ghurair Investment LLC.

adel-al-nowais.gifUnder their agreement, Federal Foods will distribute the full product range of Al Ghurair Foods’ flagship brand Jenan – including flour, edible oils, pasta, noodles and eggs - to “every nook and cranny of the UAE”, according to Mr Al Nowais. “Federal Foods has six branches in the UAE and excellent warehousing facilities in every Emirate, serviced by a logistics fleet of more than 200 temperature-controlled vans. We have been serving prominent clients since 1991 and are delighted to add Al Ghurair Foods to that list.” Welcoming the new partnership, C.E.O Aakil commented: “This now permits us to devote all our energies to building brands that engage consumers while offering them differentiated products.”

He added: “Al Ghurair Foods has a strong sense of social responsibility towards consumers, the community and the country as a whole. The UAE’s rapidly-increasing food requirements can only be met through a policy of long-term sustainable growth. We required a distribution partner who shared these core corporate values, which is why we are delighted to have Federal Foods on board.”

Al Ghurair Wins Health and Environment Awards at Gulfood 2013

The Foods Division of UAE conglomerate Al Ghurair LLC scooped two major prizes at the Gulfood 2013 Awards – showcase event of the world’s biggest Food & Hospitality Exhibition. Al Ghurair Foods won the ‘Best Health Education Initiative’ and ‘Best Environmental Sustainability Campaign’.

The company collected the Health Education award for ‘A Better Tomorrow’ – an initiative designed to educate Special Needs children in the Arts & Science of Foods. Conducted in association with Al Noor Special Needs School, the program was part of a “call to action” by Al Ghurair to integrate such children into the community.

A major focus of the initiative is to boost the confidence and employment prospects of  special needs students, thereby equipping them to support themselves in adulthood. Research has shown that the number one fear of parents with Special Needs children is how they will cope when their parents are no longer there to take care of them.

To encourage self-reliance and improve their jobs outlook, Al Ghurair Foods Division regularly invites students from Al Noor Special Needs School to its Bustan Macaroni and Noodles facility in Jebel Ali. There, the young visitors are given a first hand view of the production process and learn about healthy food and nutrition.

A foods ‘edutainment’ program guides the inquisitive youngsters through the ‘Arts & Science’ of Foods – and follows up with practical training courses on how to make and sell food products in order to earn a living and secure their future. The initiative has prompted a number of participating students to explore a career in the Foods industry.

Al Ghurair’s second award – ‘Best Environmental Sustainability Campaign’ – was in recognition of a month-long initiative conducted in association with Dubai Chamber’s  Sustainability Network and Dubai Municipality.  Titled ‘Be Responsible – Rethink Waste’, the campaign focused on food wastage which accounts for 34% of all waste generated in the UAE.

Launched with the support of 20 leading corporates, the Al Ghurair campaign targeted all sections of the community – from businesses to housewives – and urged them to ‘Be Responsible’  by minimizing and preventing food wastage.

The campaign program included screenings of the theme-appropriate movie ‘Bag It’ at various Dubai cinemas; edutainment activities at malls throughout the emirate; Best Practice seminars for students and a Corporate Seminar on ‘Industrial Waste Management’ delivered to the business community by Dubai Municipality.

The twin prizes for Al Ghurair continues an awards success story for the company dating back to Gulfood 2010. Group Communications Manager, Sameera Fernandes, said: “We are delighted that our past year’s health and environmental campaigns have been recognized – but the real prize is being able to enhance lives in the community we serve.

“Our community initiatives are part of Al Ghurair’s deep commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs which give us immense satisfaction and an opportunity to give back to the people and communities who have supported us throughout our history and that of the UAE”.

  • Food Security critical to World Order, Global Summit warned

Food Security critical to World Order, Global Summit warned

Global food security is one of the most critical issues facing the international community as rapid population growth and economic development combine to place unprecedented strain on the world’s finite food resources.

gulfood2.jpgThe warning was delivered to the Global Food Leaders Summit in Dubai by Essa Al Ghurair, Vice-Chairman of UAE conglomerate Al Ghurair Investment LLC and Chairman of the company’s Resources division – a major international player in agricultural commodities.

The global foods summit – part of Gulfood 2013 at Dubai World Trade Centre – heard  Al Ghurair address a panel of international experts assembled to discuss ‘The Private Sector’s Role in Assuring Food Security’ and the associated issue of responsible investment.

“It is difficult to overstate the importance of food security and the consequences of failing to provide it”, he said. “It is not only a matter of preventing widespread famine;  it is a matter of preventing a breakdown in social order and the potential disintegration of society as we know it. That is the ultimate consequence of inaction”.

Al Ghurair said that Governments and food producers around the world were facing unprecedented challenges to ensure food security. “Last year the world’s population broke the 7 billion barrier and by 2025 at the latest it will be eight billion. Combined with this we have rapidly-developing economies in China, India, Russia and Brazil – sophisticated consumers demanding new and diverse food options.

“At the same time as demand is growing, farmers and other providers of agricultural resources are being squeezed – by weather extremes caused by global warming; by high oil prices; by the growing use of biofuels and a host of other factors. And as for land, well…as someone once said…: ‘They ain’t making any more of it!’. In fact farming land is rapidly being diminished by urban sprawl and farming dynasties themselves are disappearing as the young leave the land for the city.

“Against that background, it is little wonder that the U.N’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that inflation in food prices could lead to turmoil in nations that import food. We could face a repeat of the world food crisis of 2007-8 when soaring food prices sparked riots in the streets of Egypt, Cameroon and Haiti to name but a few. The charity Oxfam has also warned that a surge in prices could drag millions more into famine at a time when one billion people are already unable to feed themselves.

“Imagine. One billion men, women and children going to bed hungry every night.  And what are we in the developed world doing about it? We are over-consuming to an extent where an estimated 50% of our food is thrown away. That’s right, we are throwing away food that millions around the globe are quite literally dying for – and that’s an abomination. In large measure, we are the cause of the foods crisis, so we must be part of the solution”.

Al Ghurair – a longtime critic of food wastage – said the time to face the “myriad challenges” facing the industry was now. “It must be done when the shelves of the global supermarket are full. When they are empty, it is too late. Sustainable consumption is key – whether it be food, water or energy resources”.

Addressing food security in the UAE, he said that the country imported around 68% of its food and that consumption was steadily growing by approximately 12% every year. Food staple reserves were sufficient to meet the population’s needs for five months at any given time.

gulfood1.jpg“Food security is ultimately the responsibility of governments as they are the ones who dictate and implement policy. But the private sector has a vital role to play. We must encourage and support the diverse measures necessary to ensure food security in the long term. For example, the UAE Government has specialist advisory panels to help guide their policy making – and Al Ghurair provides regular strategic input on the Food Security issue.

“What we share is a common recognition that net food importers such as the UAE must take steps to be as self-sufficient as possible – and that means investment far outside our own borders. Just as Al Ghurair Resources has manufacturing, production and storage plants throughout the MENA region and beyond, the UAE is investing in farms abroad – especially in Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, Pakistan, Romania and the Americas. In this way the country secures food supplies and ensures it is not constantly at the mercy of market forces.

“Achieving this means maintaining diversity in source markets to ensure continuity in the face of challenges in one particular market or region. Did you know that since the formation of Al Ghurair’s Flour Mills in 1976, we have never once run out of wheat to supply flour to the marketplace. That’s food security in action.

“We maintain the availability of grain to fulfill our plant requirements at all times and we source from different parts of the world so that if one has a problem, we can always source it from other countries. This is also very much the strategy of the UAE. There is no quick fix for food security issues. It takes pre-emptive measures, innovative solutions and long-term strategic planning”.

Al Ghurair added: “The steps being taken by the UAE Government give us confidence that the country is serious about food security and is taking every possible measure to control prices. It is now up to consumers to play their part by avoiding extravagance and minimizing wastage. Sustainable consumption is no longer an option – it is an absolute necessity to prevent a global foods meltdown”.

  • Al Ghurair Centre to open AED 2 Billion Expansion

    19 February, 2013

Al Ghurair Centre to open AED 2 Billion Expansion

Al Ghurair Centre in Dubai is to complete a AED 2 billion expansion this summer, adding an array of new shops and a world-class entertainment zone to the existing mall.

The Deira-based shopping centre, which was the first of its kind to open in Dubai more than three decades ago, will almost double its retail area with 150 additional stores and food outlets, refurbished cinemas, and a large entertainment zone featuring an indoor rollercoaster and ice rink.

The expansion is opening in stages. A five-star hotel and a luxury serviced-apartments tower opened in December. The remaining retail and entertainment zone expansion is set to open for trade in mid-2013.

Ibrahim Al Ghurair, Managing Director of Al Ghurair Properties, described the mall expansion as a “vital component” in the ongoing development of a “revitalised” Deira area.

“We are confident that the expanded Al Ghurair Centre will be a hit with both residents and visitors and are very excited to be contributing to the Dubai Government’s exciting vision for old Dubai.”

“With the expansion, we aim to benefit from the ongoing potential in this vitally important area, as well as contribute to its future development,” Mr Al Ghurair added.

The Al Ghurair Centre became the first modern shopping mall of its kind in the Middle East when it opened in 1981, setting the UAE on a path to becoming a global shopping destination.

Considered a pioneer in its field, the mall currently boasts a retail area of 480,000 sq ft, comprising 200 stores, 20 F&B outlets, and an eight-screen cinema run by Grand Cinemas.

Before embarking on the expansion plan, Al Ghurair Properties commissioned a consultant to provide a comprehensive feasibility study that included independent market research.

After establishing a need for an expanded mixed-use development, it hired the UAE-based civil engineering company Ascon as project contractor and Turner International as project manager. The global design practice RTKL Associates Inc won the architectural contract.

Scheduled to open in mid-2013, the shopping mall expansion will boast an additional 375,000 sq ft of gross leasable retail space with 150 new stores, taking the total number to 350 stores and 855,000 sq ft of gross leasable area.

newnewsimg2.jpgDavid Thurling, recently appointed as Vice President - Mall at Al Ghurair Centre, said: “The full retail expansion will open in mid-2013 to coincide with the busy Eid shopping period when footfall in the existing mall typically increases 15-20 per cent.

“Deira remains a key economic and commercial hub with multiple tourist attractions, a high population density, and almost 80 per cent of Dubai’s hotels and hotel apartments. Although Dubai’s retail market is increasingly competitive, we feel that there remains a huge opportunity considering that the retail potential of Al Ghurair Centre’s primary trade area exceeds AED 12 billion.”

Family entertainment will come in the form of Sparky’s – the premium entertainment brand owned and operated by the Saudi-company Al Hokair Group. Highlights of the nature and technology-themed zone will include an ice rink, a climbing wall, bumper cars, a 5D cinema and a rollercoaster.

The hotel management company Rotana kicked off the expansion in December with the opening of the Al Ghurair Rayhaan five-star hotel and the Al Ghurair Arjaan serviced apartments – bringing 428 hotel rooms and 192 apartments on stream. A new office tower completed the business and hospitality mix.

Media Roundtable with Vice-Chairman Essa Al Ghurair and Group CEO Constantin Salameh

12-12-12-1.jpg12-12-12-2.jpgCommented Al Ghurair Vice-Chairman, Essa Al Ghurair, “As part of our strategy moving forward in enhancing our business and organizational capabilities, it was integral for us to appoint a Group CEO. Given the diversity of our sectors – the main role of the Group CEO will be to create synergies between our multi-sector companies, improve corporate governance and finally assist our multi-sector companies achieve their goals”.

Media Questions & Answers with newly appointed Group CEO Constantin Salameh

    Q) We have extensive details of your background, employment history and education. But is there any one thing – one approach - that has served you well over the years?

    A) Most definitely. I am an Engineer by education and went on to broaden that knowledge with an MBA. It is a good combination – producing an ability to keenly analyze business challenges and find the best way to address them. I have been applying this across my career in various family-owned businesses and multinationals like Hewlett-Packard (HP) where I spent 19 years.

     Q) Why did you decide to join a family business like Al Ghurair after being in a multinational for so long?

    A) I have worked with both family businesses and multinationals in the Gulf Region and worldwide so this is not a new experience. Al Ghurair may be a family business but it is also a major conglomerate with worldwide reach. It gives me the opportunity to work with a visionary chairman and an industrial group that have been pioneers in all the sectors they have touched over the years.

     Q) Al Ghurair is one of the founding firms of UAE industry and commerce and a very prominent name in the region. Did that influence your decision to join the company?

    A) Well there’s no doubt Al Ghurair is uniquely positioned because of its history, proven track record, pioneering spirit and heritage. That’s a very solid foundation on which to build the future – and I want to be part of that mission. We have a rich past with strong values that are synonymous with those of the UAE – and  these are values I am proud to be associated with.

    Q) Al Ghurair is described as a diversified industrial group. Exactly how diverse are your interests?

    A)  The sheer depth and breadth of the Al Ghurair portfolio was one of the main reasons I accepted this role. Foods, Construction, Resources, Properties, Retail, Energy, Printing and Publishing – even Education. Al Ghurair built the first shopping mall in the Middle East 30 years ago; were the first grain millers; helped build the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Metro; have the largest crushing plant in the region – and much more besides.

    Q) Does having such a diverse multi-business portfolio present any special challenges? How do you plan to take the company forward?

    A)  The challenge is to consolidate and improve our existing profit centres while always looking for new opportunities to drive growth. Certainly we have no reason not to maintain our leadership position in Foods and Resources which are absolutely fundamental to the entire Al Ghurair operation. Few people are aware of the sheer scale of the Foods business. Do you know we produce enough rice to feed a million people every day? But in general, the question must be: ‘What sectors have the highest value creation potential – and how best to support them?’

Q:  Apart from Foods and Resources, which of your other core activities stand out?

A:  They are all good performers. We have strong synergies with Retail and Real estate. Both have done very well, with major investments in the Properties sector, including a major expansion at Al Ghurair Centre. The Construction Division is branching out into India where we now have our own offices. Our Energy interests include drilling rigs around the world. And, even Printing & Publishing, which is in crisis globally, has still turned a profit by diversifying into other products and expanding our market reach. All these sectors contribute in terms of a profitable growth momentum within the group.

Q:  Every Al Ghurair Sector has its own CEO. Now you have been appointed as overall Group CEO. How will you interact together?

A:  Every business unit has pockets of strong synergies with other parts of the group which amounts to value creation in the future. My role is to work with the respective business unit CEO to identify these pockets, to mobilize the right resources - financial and otherwise – and to ensure we have continuous profitable growth.

Q: What are your long-term plans for the group – say 5 years from now?

A: Al Ghurair has been a leading diversified group in this region and we want to make sure we maintain this position. We want to move from an environment where we have certain sectors, to a more dynamic overall approach in managing the portfolio of the business units we operate. This is critical to the long term success and leadership position of the group. So more dynamic portfolio management of the group is one of the things that will become evident.

Q: What differentiates Al Ghurair from other family businesses in the region?

A: In a word – diversity. Family businesses in the region do have a lot in common, most notably an entrepreneurial spirit. But few have the scale, reach or breadth of portfolio that we have – particularly not in Foods or Resources. Nor do they have the same history in terms of innovation. Pioneering new ventures has long been the signature of Al Ghurair and will continue to be so

Q: What are the recent industry trends that contribute to your thoughts and planning?

A: We are moving to a global economy. If we face some major challenges, be it from a financial crisis or a credit crunch that is going to impact this part of the world. It is important that we have a solid and healthy balance sheet in order to fund growth without over-reliance on banks. Volatility in the financial world is here and my expectation is that it will remain for the next 2-3 years. We need to make sure  we are prepared and that we don’t miss out on investment opportunities.

Secondly, the emerging economies will continue to lead world growth. By 2050, emerging economies will contribute to the top 10 countries in the world in terms of GDP growth in the US Economy. So we need to diversify even further and find the right alliances in these countries. We already invest not only in the Middle East – but in Africa and Asia. And we need to keep a close eye on territories like India, China, South East Asia and Africa, in terms of their very strong presence in Foods now.

So the continuing growth that emerging economies will have in the world is a very important trend. The changes in demographics are also important. We are already seeing a shift in the pyramids of age. What economic opportunities does that present for us? Technology too is vital in terms of the availability of data across different media. We can see changes in this part of the world – not least during The Arab Spring which has been driven by easy access to information. We must recognize and embrace these new media trends in order to communicate the right message to all our stakeholders, whether it be our employees, our shareholders, our customers, our suppliers – or indeed the Government, who we interact with on a very regular basis. These are just a few of the trends that are shaping our thoughts – and, in turn, giving us an opportunity to help shape the world.

Q: How would you describe your leadership style?

A: My style is based on open communication. My office is open – everyone can contact and meet me. It’s important to hear what people have to say. It’s all about teamwork – having the right people, getting the best out of them, building rapport and, not least, celebrating success together.

It has a history of pioneering innovative businesses across the region. It also has global reach, with operations spanning more than 20 countries on four continents.

“One of the challenges for such diverse and multi-faceted businesses is to maintain and enhance collective focus and strategic direction, particularly in difficult economic times. Al Ghurair has always evolved to meet such challenges. I look forward to helping the Chairman and the Board build upon a proud past to secure an even brighter future for the company and all its stakeholders.”

    Modern Metro - Transforming Travel

Following its pivotal role in the world-renowned Dubai Metro project, Al Ghurair Construction has been called upon to provide ground engineering works for two more Light Rail schemes in the Gulf and India. The Lusail Metro in Qatar and the Chennai Metro in Tamil Nadu will complete a trio of transport infrastructure projects serving millions of commuters in three diverse cities.

The new Metro contracts testify to the reputation of Al Ghurair Construction among developers worldwide – particularly following completion of the Dubai Metro under a global spotlight. The company’s Readymix Division was heralded by the Japan-led consortium for its “unquestionable service, vision and commitment”. And now it’s sister operation, Al Ghurair Construction Foundations, has been rewarded for its own essential contribution to the UAE flagship project.

Said Badr Al Ghurair, CEO of Al Ghurair Construction, “Together, the two divisions have amply demonstrated the capabilities of Al Ghurair Construction – Readymix in the field of concrete supply services, and Foundations in the highly technical arena of shoring, piling and other ground engineering disciplines”.

Today Dubai Metro is the world’s longest fully-automated driverless train system and has earned many accolades, including a Best Sustainable Transport Infrastructure award.  Al Ghurair Construction was at the heart of that infrastructure – with the Readymix Division responsible for the efficient and timely delivery of 2,655,500 cubic meters of concrete.

Now the ‘Foundations’ sector  is aiming to replicate its own Dubai Metro success in two vastly different urban landscapes – the fledgling city of Lusail in neighboring Qatar which will have a projected population of 250,000; and the historic South Indian city of Chennai – the country’s sixth most populous with 4.7 million residents.

The new ‘future city’ of Lusail is being developed on a waterfront site located 15 km north of the Qatari capital, Doha. Covering 37 square kilometers, it will be served by its own Light Rail Metro consisting of four lines, 30 km of track and 35 stations.

The Chennai Metro – serving a huge metropolis more than 20 times that of Al Lusail City – will cost an estimated $2.5 billion. Phase One of the project, consisting of two initial corridors covering 45 km of track, is slated for completion in 2015.

For the Chennai project, Foundations Division will undertake major ground works on the Metro’s five underground stations, using state-of-the-art cutting equipment allied to the most sophisticated construction techniques. It is the company’s first major contract in India – providing a strong foothold in a rapidly developing market for foundation infrastructure work.

For the Lusail Project, ‘Foundations’ are currently installing the deep wells and undertaking shoring works for four stations. Indeed the Division came up with a smart alternative solution for shoring which reduced the original 8-month schedule by two months – an initiative which proved critical in winning the contract over rival bidders.

When both the projects are complete, Al Ghurair will have helped transform the transport experience of seven million people in three great cities – and enhanced its own growing reputation as a leading exponent of Light Rail Metro construction.

    About Al Ghurair Construction

Al Ghurair Construction has been a foundation stone of Dubai’s growth for more than three decades, literally changing the face of the Emirate. Iconic developments such as Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Metro testify to our expertise across all key areas of the construction industry. Our core activities – Aluminium, Readymix, Foundations and Masonry – have enabled us to embrace diverse projects throughout the Arabian Gulf and beyond.

Al Ghurair Plays Key Role in Dubai Sustainability Network Waste Management Campaign

An environmental campaign was launched in October to heighten public awareness of crucial waste management issues. The initiative – ‘Be Responsible – Rethink Waste’ – is aimed at promoting waste reduction and the efficient use of resources.

The campaign was organized by Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Dubai Municipality – in association with Al Ghurair, a leading member of the Chamber’s pioneering ‘Sustainability Network’.

The company – also known as Al Ghurair Investment LLC – spearheaded an initiative by the network’s Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Task Group – one of five groups operating under the auspices of the Dubai Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business.

Main objective of the event was to galvanize the public into supporting ‘green’ initiatives by adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle and committing themselves to ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’.  The campaign targeted a diverse audience including ordinary citizens, children, owners/managers of small to medium firms and ‘green teams’ in larger business concerns.

Focus for the campaign were major shopping malls located throughout Dubai. They included Al Ghurair Centre, Oasis Mall, Deira City Centre, Mirdiff City Centre and Mall of the Emirates. Branded recycling stations provided bins for paper, plastic, cans and glass – with souvenirs and giveaways providing an incentive to participate.

A host of activities were organized in order to present a serious environmental message in a fun and interesting way at host mall Al Ghurair Centre. This created maximum public interest and involvement. Posters, brochures, pop-up stands, T-shirts, LCD presentations and even movies were used to deliver the waste management message.

The campaign was launched at a Dubai Chamber Press Conference on October 10. Mr. Atiq Juma Nasib, the Chamber’s Senior Director of Commercial Services, told the audience: “Raising awareness about the importance of recycling and reducing waste is vital if we want to protect the world and its precious resources for future generations.

“This campaign will help spread the message about the importance of recycling and reducing waste in our homes and businesses – and hopefully inspire people to move towards creating a sustainable future”.

The Press Conference was also addressed by Al Ghurair’s Vice-Chairman, Essa Al Ghurair, a staunch opponent of wasteful business practices. He told the assembled gathering: “We are pleased to be part of this campaign and excited to spread the awareness of waste management.

“This is a concept that we have been closely associated with – and one that is followed by our employees throughout our various divisions. We hope to encourage both the public and businesses to take up this cause. It is all about managing waste effectively and adopting a sustainable approach that will stamp a green footprint on our city and our country”.

The Press Conference began with a presentation by Sameera Fernandes, Group Communications Manager and Head of CSR at Al Ghurair. Ms. Fernandes said that the company was “delighted to lead such a worthy initiative on behalf of all the Chamber’s Sustainability Network members”.

The Press Conference was followed that evening by a theme-appropriate Movie Night at Mirdiff City Centre and Mall of the Emirates which screened ‘Bag It’, a world-renowned documentary on the impact of plastic on the environment. Later, on October 15, the Waste Management Awareness Campaign arrived on campus with a seminar conducted at Al Ghurair University.

Then, on October 23, the Dubai Chamber, in association with Dubai Municipality organized a mini conference on ‘Industrial and Commercial Waste Management’.  Finally, at the end of October, the Task Group members presented an Issues Brief and Policy Document.

The waste management campaign was jointly organized by the Sustainability Network whose members also include the Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, Nokia, Henkel, Aramex, Eros, Pepsico, HSBC, CHEP Middle East, Landmark Group, Majid Al Futtaim Properties and Dubai Municipality.

The Chamber’s Sustainability Network set up its five task groups in April 2012, made up of leading Dubai companies committed to promoting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) among the business community. Since then the Network has evolved quickly, spawning a variety of environmental initiatives and consolidating the UAE’s position as  regional leader in CSR and Sustainability throughout the Gulf and wider Middle East.

An environmental campaign was launched in October to heighten public awareness of crucial waste management issues. The initiative – ‘Be Responsible – Rethink Waste’ – is aimed at promoting waste reduction and the efficient use of resources.

  • ‘Go Green’ for Sake of UAE, Emirati Students Urged

‘Go Green’ for Sake of UAE, Emirati Students Urged

Campus Call to Action on Environment

The support of young Emiratis is key to making the UAE a more environmentally-friendly country, according to a ‘green team’ which has hit the campus trail in Dubai. The rallying call was made to students at Al Ghurair University by members of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Centre for Responsible Business managed Sustainability Network.

The University hosted a special seminar where Network members – made up of leading Dubai companies  – shared with students ‘best practice’ solutions and company insights into Waste Management and Resource Efficiency. The students were urged to “reduce, reuse and recycle” in order to make the UAE a greener place.

The seminar heard that the country generates the highest ‘per capita’ waste in the world, with a “local environment that is very fragile and needs protection”.  A Dubai Chamber presentation appealed to the students directly, telling them: “You are the future of the country – future employees and business owners”.

The campus call to action was part of the Chamber’s month-long environmental awareness  campaign, ‘Be Responsible – Rethink Waste’, and was described as a “real eye opener” by  Dr. Abdel Rahim Alameen, President of Al Ghurair University. Commonly known as ‘AGU’, the University is a community-orientated institution at Dubai Academic City. It maintains close ties with Government and is attended by mainly ‘local’ students.

Commenting on the University initiative, Mr. Atiq Juma Nasib, Senior Director of Commercial Services Sector, Dubai Chamber, emphasized the importance of “protecting the world and its precious resources for future generations.”

He added: “That future begins with the young. They are the business leaders of tomorrow – so the Dubai business community of today must inspire them to create a bright and sustainable future.”

A.G.U President, Dr. Alameen added that the seminar had allowed his students to interact directly with senior representatives of local and international companies. “They saw first hand the prevailing waste management practices deployed by such companies – and the  commitment these companies have towards recycling and a greener environment.”

Group-Comms-Manager-Al-Ghurair-Sameera-Fernandes-shares-best-practices-to-students-faculty.jpgSameera Fernandes, Group Communications Manager at Al Ghurair  Investment LLC, said: “These young Emiratis are the future business leaders of the UAE and it is vital we get them aboard. “It is our responsibility to educate students on all aspects of environmental awareness. We need to promote a culture of commitment to the environment – and then get the young to adopt it as a way of life, ” she added.

The participating companies were Al Ghurair, CHEP Middle East, Henkel Arabia, HSBC and Nokia who are among more than 33 corporate members to have joined the Dubai Chamber’s Sustainability Network since its launch in December 2010. Members also include Dubai Municipality who helped arrange the event.

Addressing the University Faculty Panel and students, each company detailed its own particular initiatives in the field of waste management and resource efficiency but emphasized their unity of purpose – namely “to promote responsible business practices in the UAE by encouraging members to become innovative and sustainability driven.”

  • “Waste Not, Want Not” Change Eating Habits, Urges Al Ghurair

    “Waste Not, Want Not”

Change Eating Habits, Urges Al Ghurair

UAE consumers have been urged to reduce food wastage amid fears of a global food crisis and impending famine in the poorest parts of the world. The plea has come from the Vice-Chairman of UAE-based conglomerate Al Ghurair whose Foods Division is a significant manufacturer and supplier to international markets.

“We live in a dynamic and fast-changing world”, said Essa Al Ghurair “but one that is facing many problems. There is often a temptation for more affluent countries like the UAE to try and isolate themselves from these problems. But ultimately this is not possible – particularly where food issues are concerned.”

The food issues currently on the global agenda include soaring prices, extreme weather conditions, tight export restrictions and the ever-growing demand for bio-fuels. July saw a surge in global food prices, prompting dire warnings from the United Nations and the international charity Oxfam.

The U.N’s Food and Agriculture Organization said the world food crisis of 2007-8 could be repeated if countries introduce export restrictions in response to grain price hikes fuelled by drought. And Oxfam warned that the soaring prices could spell famine for millions around the globe.

“In such a climate, Governments, Food Producers – and, yes, ordinary citizens – must join forces to wage war on want”, said Essa Al Ghurair. “There are already an estimated one billion people in the world who go hungry every day – and that is an abomination.

“In the UAE we have been spared such calamity - and we should give thanks for that good fortune every day by avoiding over-consumption and doing everything possible to minimize food wastage. Quite frankly, we should feel ashamed to throw away food that so many others are in desperate need of”.

Mr.Essa added, “Sustainability is key. We must learn to consume what we need, not what we want. That applies whether it be food, water, energy or any other of our planet’s blessings.

I would call on all citizens to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle across the board – but particularly where food is concerned.”

Turning to current global food concerns, the Al Ghurair Vice-Chairman addressed soaring prices and explained what the company – also known as Al Ghurair Investment LLC – is doing to ensure continuity of production.

“One of the biggest drivers for price hikes is oil”, he said. “It is a vital component of food production costs as it is used for everything from driving farm and factory machines to fertilizers. That’s why I say we cannot isolate ourselves from world economic conditions. There’s no immunity from increased oil prices. We have to accept them because we are in a free economy”.

“We are also not exempt from the problems of other industries. A good example is Construction. In recent years there has been a downturn which means a reduction in manpower. Laborers consume a lot of bread – so when many laborers left, we  witnessed a decrease in flour demand. Slowly but surely, however, we are returning to the previous numbers.”

Although part of an interdependent global community, the foods division was in a better position than most to “ride the storm” in times of global crisis or uncertainty. “We have been in business since the 1970’s – and in all of that time we have never run out of wheat to supply flour to the market. That’s because we have achieved diversity in our source markets to ensure continuity in the face of challenges in one particular market sector.

“We maintain the availability of grain to fulfill our plant requirements at all times and we source from different parts of the world to give us options if supplies from one particular country are interrupted. This policy is part and parcel of our deep commitment to meeting our customers’ needs both at home and abroad.”

    About Al Ghurair Foods

Al Ghurair Foods was founded in 1976 with the creation of a small flour mill in Bur Dubai. Today the company is a technologically-advanced multi product manufacturing enterprise with market presence in more than 20 countries and a customer base on four continents.

  • “Give Back”, Businesses Urged Support Communities Says Al Ghurair

“Give Back”, Businesses Urged Support Communities

     says Al Ghurair

news1.jpgIt is time for big business to “give back” to the community by exercising corporate social responsibility, says a Dubai captain of industry. The rallying call was made yesterday by Essa Al Ghurair, vice chairman of Al Ghurair and a stalwart of UAE trade and commerce.

His comments came as Al Ghurair – also known as Al Ghurair Investment LLC – teamed up with Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry to promote a raft of community-based initiatives. A recent survey by Dubai Chamber showed that 60% of Dubai businesses demonstrated a “lack of awareness” of CSR.

“Corporate social responsibility is a bit of a mouthful but its meaning is clear”, said Mr Essa’s statement. “Put simply, the aims of industry and commerce must go far beyond the simplistic goal of making money. Businesses and corporations have a wider responsibility to their customers, their communities and society in general. We cannot stand aloof from their problems and needs.”

Al Ghurair is a member of the Dubai Chamber’s ground-breaking Sustainability Network, set up to advance CSR and Sustainability in the UAE, promote and internalize CSR best practices and to build CSR based competitive advantages and business reputation. “We are delighted to be part of Dubai Chamber’s work in the field of corporate social responsibility and sustainability,” said Mr Essa, “not least because it reflects Al Ghurair’s own long-standing core values over many decades.

“The truth is that business cannot survive in isolation from the communities and people it serves. Ultimately it is they who put us where we are and it is time to give something back.”

In a fresh initiative, Al Ghurair will play a key role in four special task groups set up by the Dubai Chamber to study workplace wellness, employee volunteering, community engagement and waste management and resource efficiency.

Mr Essa said he was confident that these and other CSR initiatives would continue to contribute towards the sustainability agenda of Dubai and beyond. “Dubai Chamber has played a major role in promoting and encouraging CSR in the UAE and is now a leading role model not only in the country, but in the Gulf and wider Middle East.”

His Excellency Hisham Al Shirawi, 2nd Vice Chairman of Dubai Chamber, said: “Sustainability has definitely become a pre-requisite for any successful business – and Al Ghurair understands its importance better than most. The company, like Dubai Chamber, has long-embraced the values of social responsibility and commitment to the community and was practicing CSR when it was in its infancy in this part of the world. We congratulate Al Ghurair on their efforts to communicate the corporate responsibility message. They have a wealth of experience that is helpful in persuading other businesses that CSR is not a burden but a benefit. Supporting communities is not only the right thing to do – ultimately, it makes good business sense too.”

Al Ghurair Reaches Out with the Ramadan Care & Share Campaign

To celebrate the Holy Month, employees of Al Ghurair are reaching out to the community with a ‘Ramadan Care & Share Campaign’ designed to support people in need.

Company staff, their families and friends, have joined together to donate clothes, toys and books to the less fortunate members of Dubai’s multi-cultural society – irrespective of nationality or religion. They also plan, where possible, to meet directly with beneficiaries of the campaign – whether young, old, working, unemployed or retired. Employee volunteers will deliver clothing items to the labour camps which house many thousands of the emirate’s construction workers.Prior to donating these items, employees have been encouraged to ensure that the donated items are in their best and most usable condition. They are then segregated into men’s, women’s and children’s wear – the latter two categories being donated to the Red Crescent. Toys will also be scrupulously checked, cleaned and personally handed over by employee volunteers to charity organisations dedicated to children.

The ‘Ramadan Care & Share Campaign’ is being coordinated by Al Ghurair– also known as Al Ghurair Investment LLC – who are placing collection boxes at all their business units throughout Dubai. Sameera Fernandes, Group Corporate Communications Manager, Al Ghurair said: “This is a campaign that we hold every year during the Holy Month of Ramadan, with the kind assistance of the Red Crescent and other charitable organisations.

“Apart from the obvious benefits to needy members of the community, we find that the Campaign brings employees together in a very harmonious way. Everyone wants to help and actively participate in this noble cause. It’s a real team effort and one which I believe reflects both the multi-cultural nature of Dubai and the true spirit of Ramadan in every way”.

    redcresent.jpg

Mohammed Al-Zarouni, Director General of the Red Crescent in Dubai, said it had become an annual tradition for Al Ghurair staff to support the charitable activities of the organization. He emphasized the importance of the collaboration which was designed to “instill human values” through voluntary efforts and in-kind donations. Mr. Al-Zarouni added that the joint initiative between Al Ghurair and the Red Crescent would help “bring joy to the underprivileged and less fortunate” – and give members of the community additional cause to rejoice during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Food Security & Price Volatility Hits the Markets

With an aim to provide a healthy array of new products the new product extension of Al Ghurair Foods, namely Oats is set to excite consumers on its versatile uses. The introduction of Oats to the product portfolio is in line with Al Ghurair Foods’ objective to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle within the region. The new Oats factory inaugural taking place tomorrow at Jebel Ali will be a huge milestone and a contribution to the UAE economy.

Addressing the issue of rising food prices, in an interview Mr.Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman, Al Ghurair Foods said, “This year is extremely critical for the foods area as we have rising issues of food security and availability. As crude oil prices increases, it will hae an effect on the grain prices as well, similar to what we have seen in the year 2008. Unless, we have a good crop in the world and no drought like in Russia last year and the heavy rains like in Australia, we can look forward to a better crop harvest season. However, if calamities such as these continue, the prices may even go up further”.

In line with its best practices, Al Ghurair Foods we are trying as much as possible to utilize our existing capacities and facilities to its optimum. We would like to enhance the best practice of sharing our knowledge and capabilities and experience with our neighbors, here based in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. We are currently running at 3000 tonnes capacity and with this joint venture, we have add an existing capacity to 1300-1500 tonnes per day of canola crushing in addition to a soya crushing capacity of 2000 tonnes.

We are now also going to be operating our new crushing plant currently in a joint venture. We also have a new project in the pipeline coming up in the region and North Africa. We have new projects in the pipeline - One new product in the region and another upcoming project in North Africa and Saudi Arabia. The new wheat silo in Algeria has silo storage capacity of 140,000 tonnes. The project has already been commissioned and the loading and unloading of ships will begin very shortly. In KSA, we will be crushing 4000 tonnes of soya bean and 3000 tonnes of canola.

  • Al Ghurair Foods: Oats Now “Made in the UAE”

Al Ghurair Foods: Oats Now “Made in the UAE”

Al Ghurair Foods, a leading Middle East foods manufacturer, officially inaugurated today its stateof- the-art oats plant, which is set to be the only provider of freshly-milled oats in the GCC, and with an annual manufacturing
capacity of 33,000 tons. The new oats facility fits extremely well within Al Ghurair Foods’ offering, and falls in line with the company’s commitment to provide high quality healthy products.

The 6000 square meters plant comes to serve the rising regional demand from different industries on locallymanufactured oats. It is a valuable addition to Al Ghurair Foods’ series of milestones, standing as the region’s first of its kind, next to a huge flour plant with a daily 5,000 tons capacity and the Middle East’s largest oil refinery. Commenting on the launch of the new oats plant, Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman of Al Ghurair Foods, said: “This new facility not only serves the UAE, as a key international trading hub and the world’s third largest re-exporter of agricultural products, but also the wider GCC region, which has long been one of the biggest food import regions in the world, bringing almost 90% of food products in from other markets. We are proud to be a major contributor to the local and regional economies and to develop local production facilities that can serve the region’s growing demand for multiple-use products such as oats.

Oats_now_Made_in_the_UAE.jpg“Our freshly-milled oats factory will provide a healthy product that can be used in several other industries. This facility will generate a significant ripple effect, adding value to the operations of numerous wholesalers, manufacturers, retailers and other entities in the food services industry at both local and regional levels,” he added. Till date, oats were being imported, requiring a lead time of at least 5 to 6 weeks. The new freshly-milled oats plant, will ensure shorter lead times and flexibility of production according to customers’ needs. Oats produced in the UAE will be distributed to region to service the high demand across numerous industries including healthcare, cosmetics and food services. According to Ibrahim Al Ghurair, Head of Business Unit – Oats, at Al Ghurair Foods, the facility is far beyond a great economic contribution that spreads out from the UAE to the region, it is also a provider of a very healthy product with proven health benefits that help address several of the health issues in the UAE and the region, including obesity and abnormal cholesterol levels which are generating worrying rates of diabetes and heart diseases.

“Freshly milled in the UAE, oats provide nourishment, satiate hunger, boost energy levels, and facilitate digestion. Oat meals are significant sources of dietary fiber, which has proven effective in lowering blood cholesterol. In addition, oat meals can spread the rise in blood sugars over a longer time period, thus slowing the rise in blood glucose levels following a meal and delaying its decline to pre-meal levels. That’s among several more benefits provided by oat meals including reducing hypertension, weight and more importantly reducing the risk of cancer,” he said. “Apart from supplying oats in bulk, our packaged oat products come as an extension to our wide variety of premium goods marketed under our flagship Jenan brand, including Flour, Pasta, Edible Oils, Noodles, Poultry, Pulses, Maize and Rice, and they fully adhere to our stringent quality measures. We continue to witness steady demand growth on our products in the Middle Eastern and African markets,” Ibrahim concluded. The high-tech facility has been developed up to the latest principals of sustainable architecture, using environment friendly building products, ecological construction methods, and recycling and water conservation practices.

Al Ghurair Foods Supports Dubai Cares’ ‘School Feeding Campaign'

Al Ghurair Foods (AGF), a leading Middle East foods manufacturer, concluded a successful two-month ‘School Feeding Campaign’ in partnership with Dubai Cares that aimed at promoting nutritious food and encouraging proper education and healthy lifestyles among children in developing countries. Commenting on the campaign, Mohammed Essa Al Ghurair, Head of Edible Oils, Al Ghurair Foods said: “As our business grows, we strive to develop our philanthropic initiatives
and better translate our commitment to support unprivileged communities around the world. We are fortunate to be able to touch the lives of children world over. Through our partnership with Dubai Cares, the School Feeding Campaign was able to promote education, proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles among thousands of additional children in developing countries.”

From 28th October to mid December 2010, all products of Jenan, the flagship brand of Al Ghurair Foods, carried the Dubai Cares sticker in support of this campaign. Instead of children working to fulfill their nutrition needs, the campaign encouraged them to engage in proper education through providing healthy meals at the school facilities – a factor which has proven to be essential in parents deciding to send their children to school. Mohammed Essa Al Ghurair, Al Ghurair Foods, underlined the importance of corporate partnerships in pursuing socially responsible endeavors, and added: “The School Feeding Campaign takes us back to our roots and reminds us of the value of basic education and the integral role it plays in carving out a holistic future for the impoverished children around the world. This initiative also reinforces our commitment of feeding our future generations not just with healthy and nutritious food, but also with a sound education thereby equipping them to face the future. We are committed to supporting communities currently faced with harsh economic realities and firmly believe that responsible corporates indeed have an imperative role to play in the building up of future generations. We are proud to be associated with Dubai Cares in making that difference.” To further support this cause, Al Ghurair Foods contributed 5% of their total retail sales in the UAE market during a Dubai Cares team visit to the Al Ghurair Foods Jebel Ali facility. Contributions were handed over by Mohammed Essa Al Ghurair to the CEO of Dubai Cares, Tariq Al Gurg who commented: “The UAE’s corporate sector has always supported our efforts in providing children with access to quality primary education in developing countries.

Leading corporates, like Al Ghurair Foods, have raised the platform of being socially responsible and helping the community at large. This is a good example of corporate organizations sincerely considering social responsibility as an integral part of their business. Together, we can strive to reach out to more children around the globe, serve their educational needs and help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goal 2 of universal primary education for all.” Today, Dubai Cares is reaching over 5 million beneficiaries in 24 countries with the support of corporate and individuals. Dubai Cares is also building and renovating hundreds of schools, training more than 20,000 teachers, establishing over 3000 Parent-Teacher Associations and distributing over 1.3 million books written in local languages.
